Justin A. Westbrook-Lowery
Justin Westbrook-Lowery was born and raised in the Southeast Bronx. He is, currently, pursuing his B.A. in Political Science at Fordham University. He is an individual who holds several positions and is an advocate for his community and the people who make it special.
As a politically active member of his community, Justin has made it a priority to advocate for issues important to middle-class families. Since 2009, when he was only 11 years old, Justin has campaigned for good elected officials and issue-based campaigns that serve the Bronx.
As someone who aspires to use government to the benefit of his community, Justin has had the opportunity to learn from important figures in Bronx politics. In 2014, he worked as an intern for the first and only openly gay elected official in the Bronx, NYC Council Member Ritchie Torres. There, he learned the importance of being proud of who you are and using that experience to help others. He has also interned for Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner and the NYC Mayor’s Office of City Legislative Affairs (CLA).
In 2015, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. appointed Justin to be one of the youngest community board members in his borough and the City of New York, as a member of Bronx Community Board 9. In this capacity, he has decided to focus on important aspects of life in the community, like education, affordable housing, public safety and small businesses. He also is a firm supporter of equal rights. He also was appointed by City Councilwoman Annabel Palma to represent his community on the DYCD Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) for Bronx District 9, which helps to administer the community service block grant to community organizations and poverty alleviation programs.
In August of 2016, Justin was blessed to be elected, unanimously, by the BYD membership to fill the vacancy for Second Vice President of the institution. He has focused his efforts on how to make BYD more issue based, particularly in health care policy, and expand its connections to the borough’s LGBT community.
In his free time, Justin is also the youngest general member and board member of the Stonewall Democrats of NYC. He is also the Vice Chairman of the New York State Young Democrats (NYSYD) Labor Caucus. He looks forward to expanding his work in the community, fighting for LGBTQ rights, fairness for all people, and progressive values.
