WHO: The Bronx Young Democrats, New York State Young Democrats

WHAT The Bronx Young Democrats are awarded the bid to host the 2016 New York State Young Democrats Convention

WHEN: Friday, May 20, 2016 to Sunday, May 22, 2016

BRONX, NY — On Thursday December 10th, the New York State Young Democrats (NYSYD) voted to bring the Biennial 2016 New York State Young Democrats Convention to the Bronx. While the NYSYD convention has traditionally alternated between downstate and upstate, it has never been held in Bronx County. From May 20-22, 2016, the Bronx Young Democrats will draw over 150 young democratic leaders from across the state. The agenda will include a welcome reception on the evening of Friday, May 20th, a full day of programming including breakfast, lunch, panel discussions and a gala with honorees on Saturday, May 21st, andNYSYD business on Sunday, May 22nd.

“The Bronx Young Democrats (BYD) were in their infancy when they joined the New York State Young Democrats in 2014. Two years later,” saidNYSYD President Mike Corbett, “the chapter will be hosting the NYSYD Convention. It’s a testament to their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to BYD President Eric Henry and the executive board officers on a successful bid. I look forward to bringing young democrats from across our state to the Bronx in May.”

The Bronx Young Dems executive board launched an exploratory committee to bring the New York State Young Democrats Convention to the great Borough of the Bronx in the summer of 2015 and worked tirelessly to advocate for the bid.

“I am pleased to inform you that we were successful in our bid,” BYD President Eric Henry wrote to the BYD membership. “The zealous advocacy from the Executive Board, support from elected officials including Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Chairman of the Bronx Democratic County Committee and Assembly Member Marcos Crespo, and assistance from community partners such as the Bronx Chamber of Commerce and Marriott International worked in securing this successful bid.”

In their application, the Bronx Young Democrats were sure to highlight Bronx assets including its demographic diversity, high-caliber of young leaders, and wealth of cultural institutions.  The Bronx is home to an impressive group of Young Democrat elected officials: Bronx Democratic Party Chairman and Assembly Member Marcos Crespo; Assembly Members Victor Pichardo, Michael Blake, Latoya Joyner; and City Council Members Ritchie Torres and Vanessa Gibson.   Additionally, City Council Member Torres is the youngest member in the Council.  The Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr., a former Young Dem, was elected to the State Assembly at only 23 years old — the youngest member in New York since Theodore Roosevelt.  Former City Council Member and majority leader Joel Rivera was the youngest person ever elected to the New York City Council in 2001 at the age of 22.  The Bronx breeds young, talented elected officials.

“This is a great honor for not only the Bronx Young Democrats, but for the entire Bronx,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “As a former Bronx Young Democrat myself, I know how important this organization is, and I look forward to participating in this convention in the coming spring. Great things are happening in my borough, and hosting this convention will allow us an opportunity to showcase our continued revitalization to an audience of engaged, civic-minded young leaders from all over New York State.”

Arguably the most Democratic county in New York State with 91 percent of votes in the 2012 presidential election going to President Obama —  the second highest percentage President Obama won in any county, only behind Shannon County, South Dakota — the Bronx is the perfect place to host the 2016 convention.

The Bronx Young Democrats seek to engage young democrats in the pursuit and implementation of the values and principles of the Bronx Democratic Party. Through outreach, educational activities and advocacy, the Bronx Young Democrats promote the ideals of the Democratic Party and lend its support to those candidates and members who exhibit the highest standards of integrity and conviction. The Bronx Young Democrats work incessantly to empower Bronx residents and the community through its alliance with Bronx Democratic Party and its unending commitment to service, justice, and fairness.

Reinstated in 2011 after decades of inactivity, BYD members are young professionals, college and high school students, local elected officials and Party representatives, organized workers and activists with one thing in common: an interest in issues and causes that affect Bronxites and Americans, including, but not limited to civil rights and liberties, economic development, education, elections and voters’ rights, health and social issues, and labor.

The growing organization empowers Bronx youth between the ages of 18 and 36 to participate in the democratic processes in the Bronx through professional and leadership development trainings, community service activities, public outreach, policy advocacy and professional networking events for youth in the borough. An executive board and four standing committees (engagement and recruitment, community service, communications and fundraising) lead the organization.

The New York State Young Democrats are the official youth arm of the New York State Democratic Committee. The New York State Young Democrats represent young democrats between the ages of 16-36 living in all of New York’s 62 counties. Members of the organization strive to make a positive difference in the community by working within the political process and upholding the principles of the Democratic Party. The membership base reflects the broad diversity of New York and the party, including high school students, college students, young workers, professionals and families.
